View Full Version : Using clincher tires as tubeless tires

I have heard you can convert regular clincher tires into tubeless. I have Mavic crossland wheels and may want to try this. Has anyone done this? if you have, how is it done and does it work well.

Your thinking of the Stans No Tubes kits. Go to notubes.com. I don't know how well it works with regular tires but the sealant works great with UST's. I plan to try it on my non UST bike this spring when I get new tires.

I have been using Stans for 2 seasons with clinchers on tubeless hoops (Bontrager Mustang UST rims with a mix of different non-UST clinchers). I've used this combo in a wide variety of conditions from East Coast winter slop to Moab desert and have no complaints. I would stick with non-UST clinchers...UST clinchers are just too damn hard to mount and dismount. It has been my experience that the Stans has to be "replenished" every 3-4 weeks esp. in hot weather (due to evaporation?). For what it's worth, given the current weather, I have gone tubeless with studded non-UST clinchers and had no problems down to approx. 5 degrees F. Well, other than a little frostbite on my nose and my shocks didn't really work well at that temp and it was just damn cold.

I have used non-ust tires on non-ust rims using Stan's and had great results. Had to be replensihed but not as often as the previous post. Maybe... once every 6 to 8 weeks? You might need compressed air to get it to seat right from the start. Go for it

I have also used a stan kit for about 2 yrs. Just one warning though, a tubless tire has a slighty different clincher profile than a regular clincher, so running ultra low psi can be a problem. I have experienced "burping" from regular clinchers when run as tubless at low psi. What solved this( at least for me @ 150lbs) is to run the min psi rated for the tire.

Other than that, avoid multi colored regular tires, I have had problems with there being a lot of little holes between the regular black color and in this case the "yellow grippy portion" on python golds. They eventually sealed but it took forever and provided many small leaks but big headaches.

My Christmas present to myself was a Notubes kit, Rhynolite wheels, and Continental Gravity Pro tires. I should be putting them together next week. We shall see how it goes.
