When do we expect Schafer to open.
This week looks like it should dry everything out pretty well.

I merged your guys threads, since you both asked basically the same question about 2 minutes apart.
I don't think Schaeffer is open yet. When it reopens is variable (there is no set date). Its generally weather based.

It will be up to the rangers. They usually reopen in the mid-to-late March timeframe, so it probably won't be too long now as long as the weather doesn't revert to what its been all winter.

The Bakers Dozen is a race in Leesburg that is held on April 19th. It's a thirteen hour race. The course is just under seven miles with not too much climbing. The trails are only open to pre-riding when the promoters post something on the event website. The race is called The Leesburg Bakers Dozen.
Last year the race was awesome!
Fun, well run and fast with a cool midnight party after the awards.
Here's the link.

Is there a phone number we can call or ranger point of contact at Schaeffer? I would like to be able to check in for up-to-the-minute status updates so I can plan my weekend rides :-).

Don't expect it to be open anytime soon. We're going to need a good bit of drying out after tonight's impending rain along with some consistently warm/dry weather. I would think a couple of weeks at this point.
Check out Saxman's recent posts about Black Hills (http://www.more-mtb.org/forum/showthread.php?p=102339#post102339) and Little Bennet (http://www.more-mtb.org/forum/showthread.php?t=10662), places very close to Schaeefer, both geographically and topographically.

The phone number for Schaeffer is 301-924-1998.
At this time, the message is that it's closed for the winter :(

I think it depends on when you rode it. I got reports from people that rode it closer to 4 and they said it was almost perfect. The first lap was soup.
