I received the following invitation from Dan Schwartz, Fairfax County's Soil Scientist. He is soliciting volunteers to help with a watershed clean-up. He's willing (and enthusiastic) to help folks organize clean-ups or link folks up with one already in the works.
If liaisons want to explore this, please feel free to contact him directly.

Hello Tom,
Last year around this time you e-mailed me with interest in volunteering, along with your MORE mountain bike club compatriots, to be a part of the Potomac River Watershed Cleanup. I just wanted to let you know that 2008 watershed cleanup is just around the corner. I'm actively trying to recruit local biking and hiking clubs to take part this year as they often have the best knowledge of which parts of the county need to be cleaned. One cleanup is already in the planning stages along the Cross County Trail, but I'd like to get a few more going along that trail and others. Cleanups are region wide, so they don't have to be limited to Fairfax.
There are two ways to volunteer: establish a new cleanup or volunteer to help pick up trash at an established cleanup site. Registering of new sites and a list of existing sites looking for volnteers is all on the Alice Ferguson Foundation's website: http://www.potomaccleanup.org/trash_initiative/trash_cleanup.html. Additionally, if anyone needs help in finding a good spot for a cleanup, getting volunteers, or contacting relavent property owners (like park managers), I would be happy to help
If you could pass this information on to the MORE membership, I would greatly appreciate it. Below my signature, I am copying the text of a short promotional blurb I wrote for the cleanup.
Thanks!
Dan Schwartz

Short Press Release
The Fairfax Watershed Network is partnering with the Alice Ferguson foundation to coordinate the 2008 Potomac River Watershed Cleanup in Fairfax County. Many small neighborhood park and stream cleanups are being planned throughout the county. We are looking for volunteers to help pick up trash at these cleanups, but we are especially looking for people to establish their own neighborhood cleanups. This is a great opportunity for individuals and groups of any size. Most cleanups will be held on Saturday, April 5th, but cleanups can be organized in the weeks before and after those dates. Held annually since 1989, the Potomac River Watershed Cleanup has engaged over 35,000 volunteers and 250 partners, and removed more than 2.5 million pounds of trash from the Potomac Watershed. Cleanup locations are posted on the website. Registering a new cleanup can also be done on the website, but if you need help finding a suitable location, recruiting volunteers, and having your full trash bags removed after the cleanup, please contact Dan Schwartz at the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District.
