I'm considering a set of fenders.

Between:

SKS (available at REI)

Velo-Orange: http://www.velo-orange.com/veor45an.html

or

Woody's: http://www.woodysfenders.com/store/

What would you go with and why?

I like the Woody's and since I don't ride much in wet weather, their flat shape and increased spray isn't a huge deal, but the price is. It'll probably come down to the Velo-Orange or SKS fenders. I mainly want something to protect against water on the road after the rain has passed.

How much of a PITA are fenders once they're installed? Do they get in the way of normal maintenance?

You can't beat the style of wooden fenders! I say go for it, life is short. Justify the price by feeling good about promoting the use of renewable resources :D.

I agree. Go for the style points. :D

The woodies are beautiful, functional, light and beautiful. They look cool too.

I've got a set of the Planet Bike hybrid fenders (http://ecom1.planetbike.com/7006.html)on FrankenFixie a) because they're named after Freddy Fender (http://www.freddyfender.com/); b) they're a little wider and keep me really dry; and c) they have mud flaps for decorating (http://myroadtrips.peterbeers.net/mbrt/15Urban-dc/images/IMG_0903.jpg).

They're big enough that I can easily fit my 700x30c cross tires under them, though my current frame doesn't allow that. I test fit them on the steam roller and they're perfect.

Hope that helps.

My first choice would be for the woodies as well. However, if you're able to lay your hands on one of Dirts mud flap ladies, the choice isn't so easy.

I'm considering a set of Woody's for my road/commute bike. I just need to decide which set will look best with a royal blue framed bike. I'm also going to get a set for my little brothers fixie this christmas.

They're available at almost any truck stop worth its coin-op shoe shiner or beef jerkey display. The ladies really love them too. I've had many bust out laughing after I ride past. Come to think of it, that they did that before I installed the fenders.... maybe that isn't such a good thing.

My wife hooked me up with the Woody's last year. They are beautiful. I can't tell you how many people stop to look at them when my bike is locked up in town. I need to take a better picture with less reflection so you can really see the details.

I also dig these Soma fenders (http://www.somafab.com/eurotripfenders.html).

How are the Woody's functionally? Did the install with a minimum of fuss, are they rattle-free (as much as fenders can be), do they work reasonably well at keeping water off you?

Easy to install. They rattle as much as any other fender but not more. The do a great job of keeping me dry. I ride this bike on wet roads all the time since it's my townie and it gets used on almost a daily basis.

I have these on my Soma road bike. They are pretty low profile so the bike doesn't look too silly but they have great coverage. This morning's commute would have been sucky without them. I leave them on for group rides, etc with no problems.

I like the look of Woodys, but I think that the Honjos are the classiest:

Are the Woodies long enough to not need mud-flaps? No point in fenders if the front wheel is going to dump the rain on your shoes and the rear whell is going to spray the poor dud sucking your wheel.

I have cheap planet bike fenders with mud-flaps. The fenders are inexpensive and unattractive, but I am glad to have them.
