Does anyone have a map or Google overlay of the Accotink trails? I have followed many people through there, but it is completely different when I am on my own. I feel like I miss over half the stuff there.

I looked in the maps section and didn't find anything overly helpful.

Thanks

I've never seen a good map of Accotink. The secret to that place is to learn the perimeter trail (which runs along the railroad tracks) and the cinder trail. Pretty much everything is between those two, so once you know where those are you can explore all you want.

There are also a few trails on the other side of the dam, and at least one trail that goes onto the other side of the railroad tracks. Neither is easy to describe, so if you want to learn those you need to ride with someone who knows them. They aren't anything amazing though.

I think that is the ONLY map of Accotink and it is pretty much exact! Well done!

A trick I use is to start on the perimeter trail, and if I get a chance to go break off and go towards the cinder I take it, then take the next chance to go back up to the perimeter and repeat ad nasuem. You can hit most of the trails that way, and I always seem to find a section I haven't hit yet depending on the pattern of breaking off the perimeter. Of course, you tend to do a lot of uphill riding that way, but that just gives you stronger legs.

And if you get turned around, riding uphill generally leads to the tracks, and downhill towards the cinder. Then you can regroup and attack it again.

I've come across some GPS recordings folks have posted in the forums. I'll try to dig them up. You might also check the Fairfax County or FCPA web sites - look for GIS Mapping information. You might want to start here: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/nmtc/maps.html.

I have a hardcopy of a gps created map of accotink that has more detail than ever needed. it is extremely large I will try to get a workable digitable image of it or get one from the park.
