View Full Version : What to do with old audio components?

I am cleaning out my downstairs - over 4 years after I should have. I have had a reasonably nice amplifier/tuner and a dubbing cassette unit that are gathering dust (they probably each cost me ~$200 years ago when I got them). I assume they're not really worth money in our iPod era. Which means I have these choices:
Donate to someone who wants them
Recycle them (but where???!?!?!)
Throw them in the trash (not the preferred answer)
Can anyone help me out here?

There's a computer recycling company we use @ work.
They might take old stereo gear.
When I'm back to it on Tuesday I'll ask and send you the contact info.

If they are reasonably nice, you could try ebay or craigslist. Or there is always freecycle.
What make/model is the Amp?

What make/model is the Amp?I was mistaken. It's a CD player. I guess I don't have an amp anymore.
I figured I didn't want to do ebay because it's too much hassle shipping something heavy and delicate. I guess I could try Craigslist.
Thanks for the link regarding Loudoun recycling. I hate to wait till May to clear this stuff out of my house (which is badly overstuffed as it is). But if that's what it takes...

The 'puter recycler we use isn't seasonal, as far as I know.
Will keep you posted...

Go here http://www.freecycle.org/group/US/Virginia and pick your nearest group - someone is bound to take them.

goodwill store.
I originally thought about them, but then decided, maybe they don't take electronics.
Anyhoo, I posted to Craigslist, and a guy is picking them up tonight.
Thanks!

Seriously. It's amazing what can be sold on CL. I sold a *Laserdisc* player on there not too long ago.

I was going to recommend Craigslist.
Glad you had success.
I sold all my old stereo components on CL (except the cassette player...geez, why did I ever keep that??).
