To you all you cognicenti out there:

I suspect that this qwestion has been answered somewhere, and did a search for it with no luck, so I'm apostin'er up:

What are the different dimensional values, between chain side plates, that determine if a chain is intended for use with:

7 speed cassette ?
8 speed cassette ?
9 speed cassette ?

I know (or rather I think I know) the chain types go something like this:
> 7 spd chain w/7spd cass
> 8 spd chain w/7+8 spd cass
> 9 spd chain w/8+9 spd cass

At lease part of the problem I'm having is cuzzuv the 8 spd shifter / 9 spd cass. combo that's on the bike now
( thanks Jab :)).

So I want to match up an 8spd chain with a new 8spd cassette, and will probably buy them together, but I'd just like to know what chain is currently on there, as well as figure out for sure what types of chains I've got in my parts bin.

Thanks!

If its a shimano or sram chain, it will have the model #s stamped on the sideplates. Google will then tell you what kind of chain it is.
