View Full Version : Trouble in paradise (seat collar stripped)

Ok. Got a spanking new ride and the seat post collar stripped after two days. It must have
been some race alloy because it stripped really easily. Problem now is, how do I size it
for a replacement? I have a 2007 Hi Fi Pro.

I asked the bike shop. They wanted to see it to measure it. I'm not real inspired by the three
shops I've frequented in the area so far.

I measured it myself, eye-balling it from the side. It looks to be 36.4 mm. This is what one thread on MTBR said also.

Any ideas out there on correctly sizing it? I didn't want to rip the front derrailer off to check the inside stamp and "speed goat" has a 15% restocking fee if I get the wrong size.

I thought seatpost collars had the seatpost size on the inside. If not go to www.fisherbikes.com or www.mtbr.coms (forum section and then fisher under the manufacturers section). You will find it there somewhere.

Measure the OD with high-quality mm scale...
Seatpost & collar off, measure accross the top of the opening.

Is it the bolt that stripped? Could you replace it w/stainless?

if you go to a bike shop, they should have every diffrent size of seat post collars, and then you will have it on your bike that day.

This is a brand new bike? It should be handled under warranty. A Gary Fisher Dealer should be able to get you. All else fails, a decent quality caliper should work for you and get you the measurement that you need.

I'd also phone your order into Speedgoat and ask them. They've got some pretty serious brainpower at work in that place.

Make sure you grease the threads before you install the new collar. That is most likely the mistake that was made the last time around.

Good luck.

Pete

Apparently your seat post is a Bontrager Race Lite. Assuming the clamp is also Bontrager... Bontrager lists PN 992551 Fisher seatpost clamp (http://www.bontrager.com/Mountain/Parts_and_Accessories/Seatpost_Accessories/5753.php) as 36.4mm.

I'm not sure your front derailleur will help after looking at the Shimano specs. The LX (on the HiFi Pro per Fisher's site) uses one band size for three seat tube diameters (28.6, 31.8, and 34.9mm). If there's no spacers between the derailleur band and the seat tube, it should be 34.9mm. But this isn't consistent with what you've measured or what Bontrager lists.

Personnally I'd contact Fisher to see if they would consider a warranty replacement or "bless" a better clamp. It's possible they'll say you over torqued the clamp and voided the clamp coverage (no big deal). But you don't want to void the frame warranty (a big deal) by using an "unauthorized" clamp.

I'm not sure where you are in DC but I've had awesome service from City Bikes in Chevy Chase.

If it's a Fisher specific item, you may have better luck at a Trek dealer, like Bike Lane. Citybikes would have to come up with something improvised based on measuring, etc. Bike Lane might be able to talk to Trek, etc.

We'll have the 35.0 AND 36.4 from Salsa on Friday. The guys have the QR and bolt-on stuff on order already, I just checked the order online...

36.4 OD seems pretty big... That's the big boy. It don't come bigger...

THAT'S the service I'm talkin' about! I understand 35.0mm seatpost clamps are the same as or interchangable with 34.9mm - does that sound right?

So rsosborn, did you find out your dimension yet? I think The Bike Lane is a Fisher dealer and although they are farther than Fisher's DC shops, they'll provide outstanding service as well.

;) thanks for asking. i've been juggling getting the bontrager "tubeless ready" wheel configuration together, and running my bike to HTO to size that seat post clamp. this rain has been a stumbling block. i live downtown, do not own a car and will have to walk it to the metro, or ride it to tenleytown.

i'll let EVERYONE know once i find out, to save someone else the trouble.

i just heard from fisherbikes.com. the size of the seat post clamp is 36.4 for a 2007 hifi pro. i'll try to find a shop local to grab one and ride this weekend.

Jack Butler: Yeah. 220... 221, whatever it takes.
