View Full Version : Avoid the Bowl (occasionally mistakenly called the mixing bowl)

We went for a ride this morning and the mixing bowl had a lot of muddy spots so we bailed and rode over to Accotink, where the trails were in good shape. We didn't do much of Wakefield but I imagine there's plenty of it that should be avoided when not frozen; pre-weekend reports would be handy to keep well-intentioned riders like me off the bad spots.

In an attempt to pass along some Wakefield naming convention (And with out ((I SWEAR)) coming across like a PReacher's stICK) I would like to elaborate on that particular trail name within Wakefield. The un-named builders of this section christened it "The Bowl" because if you looked at that section of land on a TOPO it bears a resemblance to a bowl.
It was not named after the infamous (And now redesigned) intersection of all of the 95's at Springfield.
And I know what some of you all are thinking - It's also not called "The Bowls" either.
Now, someday it may be referred to as Phase V, but that's another bed time story for later.
L
PS Oh - And to stay on topic. Yea - Once that trail gets wet. It tends to stay wet.

It was all I could do to restrain myself from replying myself. Just knowing you would do it was just enough to hold my tongue. :) Too many hours on the trail working with you! :p
Peace Out!

The funny thing is that I made the same mistake a year or two ago and was appropriately chided, then promptly forgot and started calling it the mixing bowl again. Well, glad to give you an easy target; I guess some folks like fish in a barrel.

I edited the title of this thread due to the posts that followed its original posting.
(It's OK, Larry, I'm anally retentive, too!)

I can't wait until it dries up a little and I can ride at Schaeffers and Little Bennetts. Oh, and Fountainheads and Cedarvilles.
Oh, and it's fun living in South Ridings, too! :p

Not to be a smarty pants but is Phase IV resolved? You said to "Ask me again in about 6 months." (http://www.more-mtb.org/forum/showpost.php?p=71382&postcount=10)! If I recall properly, the FCPA gave a green light to improving the Deer Trails (Phase IV right?). So Phase V would be the orange flags that dotted The Bowl - right?
Now to be a smarty pants... "all of the 95's" [em-PHA-sis added] do not intersect at the at-one-time-a-quagmire better known as The Mixing Bowl. I-295 connects in another area transportation project. :p

How about ALL of the 95's that actually mean anything (To us VA folks anyway)........:D
Yes - Everything is settled on the Phase IV project except the exact dates.
The funding has been set and the contract has been let. Hopefully I'll see Rich at the Trail Caucus tomorrow to confirm the dates. Right now I believe the work is scheduled to start the second week in March.

to be a complete smarty pants, the actuall mixing bowl as designated by DOT is the highway exchange near the pentagon which was designated 30 years or so ago

thats why they try never to use the term now regarding springfield. Though we all know the real mixing bowl is in springfield right next to my house.
PS you can ride your bike under the mixing bowl in a 1/2 mile long section of sewer and inspect all the local grafitti artists work - lights definately required.
