View Full Version : Karate Monkey Chainring Clearance to Frame

I've decided to get a Karate Monkey to replace my recently broken frame. I'm looking to use the almost new cranks from my last bike (Race Face Evolve, MTN triple).
I'll be initially setting this up as a fixed commuter. I'd like to run somewhere around a 42:16 gear ratio, but worried about chain ring clearance with the frame and chain line.
Surly lists the max chain ring size of 48, which I assume would apply to the outer chain ring. I have a 42 tooth chain ring which has been filed to fit on the middle ring to give me the correct chain line. I'm concerned the 42 tooth chain ring may not clear the chain stay on the middle ring.
I'll either be using a fixed/free 135mm mountain hub, or perhaps a disc hub with bolt-on cog. So anyone ever setup a KM with road-fixed gear ratios? What did you use?
thanks,
riderx

No need to worry:
Your WI hub has a chainline set up for the middle ring (47.5), but if you are getting a new hub since you are going 29er, most mountain fixed/free hubs like Surly will place your chainline around 54mm (52 for Paul) and set you up for the outside ring on your crank. Fixed disc cog on a 135 hub will be similar.

Sorry to derail, but I want to make sure I have this straight:
Using my Tomicogs on a WI eccentric disc hub will yield different chainlines (by ~7mm)
on the fixed side and freewheel side?
:(

:(Probably. I say that because I haven't actually measured the Disc cog chainline, but I have 2 set up on Surly hubs

I running a 2x8 setup on my Karate Monkey with a 44 tooth chainring on a raceface crank mounted on the outside. with this length BB I think the 44 and probably a 42 would hit the chainstay mounted in the middle of the crank.....the problelm is the chainstays bow way out near the crank for the FFF - fatties fit fine

Are you interested in buying a used KM - small brown? I have one I may sell in order to get the Dos.
