Sort of new, so I don't know all the trail/area names, but my son and I were out at Wakefield today. The areas under the power lines are muddy, very muddy in some places. But up in the woods on either side was ok.
There has been a big tree down all week on the trail that leads out of the woods onto the creek side of under the power lines (I think part of the race course). That should deter people from going into the muddy track under the power lines that is part of the race course. (I would have thought that being in the sun would dry the open sections, but not the case).
We didn't try the creek trail today (it was fine on Saturday, but that was before Sunday's rain)

FYI - There is a Wakefield grid map at http://www.more-mtb.org/galleries/showimage.php?i=863&c=9 that you can refer to when posting downed tree, trail damage, UFO sighting... information.

I would estimate the tree is down right about where grids L & M meet at 7 & 8. Hope that's helpful.

Yeah, the trails were impossibly muddy on New Year's Day (Tuesday).

Just to let everybody know, the Park and MORE has decided to leave that fallen tree there (The one blocking direct access from Phase I onto Phase II. That section of Phase II is perpetually wet in the winter time and the hope is limit the use on that section of trail.
As an aside, the Park has just about agreed to let us start using the deer trails as an official winter bypass for Phase II. ((We are just waiting on 1 or 2 more Blessings)). I know we use them anyway, but these will (Hopefully) be officially recognized trails and therefore will qualify for maintenance support and funding for improvements.
If all of the DUCKS line up, Phase IV will probably be used to armor and improve that section of the property.
Several of us met with the Park on Friday for a walk through and things went really well.

PS PLEASE don’t anybody take out that tree!

Oops, I thought those already were official trails, just seldom used since they are not part of the racecourse.

Geez senator, where ya been all this time? Waitin' for the trails to mud up? Wait, wait, wait... I'm just yanking your chain:D. I know you're not getting that pretty new drive train of yours gunked up!

Any plans to do some work on the Deer Trails before this happens? Many of the fallen trees (hardly worth calling TTFs) are pretty rotten in those woods. I guess since 2007 was so dry the DTs have been great riding but a couple of soft spots could use some work too.

No worries. They were not actively recovered like the trails at the top. This was done semi intentional till their exact fates could be determined.

Yes - I have a list of things that have been requested to be done.
BUT - I need the last and final go-ahead from the Park.
Will keep all posted!!

Yeah, Wakefield is a mess. You can go over to Accontink and ride that. It's been pretty nice comparatively. If you are new and have not been there yet, ride down the CCT to the south, take the first single track trail UP to the LEFT after you cross the dam at Accotink. The trails there are a mixed bag, so if you have not ridden them, take it easy first time through, as there are a few unexpected things around the corner and over the rise in a few spots. Once you know the trails, I think they are a lot of fun for something so close in.

Is there a map that identifies these "Phases" you're talking about? thanks

Only MOBL knows for sure! Here's an older link which includes color coded phase areas: http://www.more-mtb.org/forum/showthread.php?t=7847. The "Deer Trails" are not shown on the map - these are in the woods between the northern red Phase I box and the Little River Turnpike.

WELL - I just blew my lunch hour trying to send the below. I hand painted the three Phases onto the GRID map. However, I don't seem to be able to upload the JPEG into the Forum Post or into the Gallery and the error message is useless.
PM me if you want a copy or if you can host the picture.
L
Really?? It seems to me that others should know. Anyway, attached is a JPEG with the Phases color coded (ala the Jackson color scheme) on the GRID map.
RED is Phase I
BLUE is Phase II
YELLOW is Phase III
The Creek trails are not color coded and as noted the Deer trails are not on the map.
FYI - We got our last OK's about 10 minutes ago. To be official, Me and Mr. Husky have to go and cut out a section form that fallen tree and a couple of the diagonal logs.
Maybe tomorrow

MOBL, can you use a hand over there tomorrow? -don't know how much there is to remove, but I can be available pretty-much whenever before 4. let me know.
I rode Wkfld today around noon. Anything in the woods was fine. Anything in the open too squishy. A lot of leaves in the bowl (surprise).

Thanks!
I'm thinking of heading out there around lunch.
Ping me tomorrow to remind me of your offer. Thursday Night rides tend to affect my short term memory....

A big thanks to BKJOE for spotting me today.
Per the Parks direction the deer trails are now officially opened and recognized as part of the network of biking trails (Till they say they aren't). I took a chain saw to the big tree blocking the entrance to the deer trail and I also cut out MANY of the smaller little ones. This was at the direction of the land owner and I did what I was told.
On a side note - The sun was starting to work its magic (in a bad way), and the trails that were fast and fun last night were turning to goop. And that was at NOON!
With the expected warm temperatures this weekend; I don't expect Wakefield to be a very good place to ride.

Great! Can we get them on the map now? Of course I'm mostly kidding - it'll make MORE rides more mysterious if the DTs aren't mapped:).
Thanks Brian and Larry for cleaning up today! I'm looking forward to seeing what's changed.

Assuming no rain, would the Bowl section of Wakey and/or Accotink be rideable this weekend? Sunday AM?
THANKS
