I rode various parts of Wakefield this afternoon sampling the 29er cool-aid thinking it would be ok to ride by now and found that most areas were pretty muddy.

Here's what I found:

Creek Trails - Braddock Rd. side had a lot of long muddy or soft sections. Some deep, some not, but all were slick. The other section from the bridge towards Little River Tnpk was soft but ridable if ridden gently.

Bowl - Mostly ok though slick on some tight turns with the wet stuff under the leaves.

Phase 1/Deer trails - Not bad really. The most ridable section.

Power lines - I only attempted to descend the section that hugs the power station fence and crosses a small creek. This was ridiculous and consisted of about a half-inch of slick mud on top of hardpack. It looked like there had been several wrecks at the U-turn. I spoke with a couple of riders who had ridden the berms and they said the berms were fine, but getting to the top of the hill was ridiculous from both sides.

Salamander to power lines in race course direction - Salamander was fine as long as you stay on the rocks and wooden bridges. The race course section after you cross the creek was mucky on the hilly section. There a two trees down across the trail right as it enters the power lines so you get detoured to an older section (Phase 1?) which is ridable with lots of smaller log hops. The problem here is that this lightly used section is now going to get over-ridden.

Personally, I won't be going back to Wakefield until a significant period of no rain or a good freeze.

Hope this was informative.

wow, I rode there last saturday and it wasn't that bad at all. The only rain was Sunday, and with the wind, I would have thought it would be ok.
